Understanding the Parameters

How to Calculate

  1. Enter Opposite side as opp (default 3 m). Use the unit menu when you need a different unit.
  2. Enter Angle as theta (default 30 degree). Use the unit menu when you need a different unit.
  3. Click Calculate. The card evaluates $\mathrm{hyp}=\mathrm{opp}/\sin\theta$ and shows the result in the declared output unit; Result in (when present) converts that number.

The Science: A Rigorous Derivation (Approaching a Proof)

In a right triangle the two acute angles are complementary, the hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle, and the three ratios $\sin\theta = \mathrm{opp}/\mathrm{hyp}$, $\cos\theta = \mathrm{adj}/\mathrm{hyp}$, $\tan\theta = \mathrm{opp}/\mathrm{adj}$ (and their reciprocals) are functions of the angle alone because all right triangles with a given acute angle are similar (AA). Pythagoras $\mathrm{opp}^2 + \mathrm{adj}^2 = \mathrm{hyp}^2$ is the identity $\sin^2+\cos^2=1$ written in lengths.

Dimensional check. The declared output unit is m; ToolBox evaluates the formula in SI (radians internally for every trigonometric call) and python-calc converts to the unit on the card.

History and Development

Egyptian seqed and Babylonian tables already encode the tangent. Greek chord tables (Hipparchus, Ptolemy's Almagest) are cosine tables in disguise. The words sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, cotangent settle in Latin Europe via Arabic jayb (sine) through Gerard of Cremona. SOH-CAH-TOA is a 19th-century teaching mnemonic for a 2000-year-old idea.
